On Being Humble.

hu·mil·i·ty
/hyo͞oˈmilədē/
noun
1. a modest or low view of one’s own importance; humbleness.

Dear Son #3,

I’m proud of you. I probably don’t tell you this enough as I’m too busy telling you to not climb unsteady things, jump off high things, put gross things in your mouth, say unsavoury words, pick on your brothers etc. But I am very proud of you. A couple of months ago, both of your brothers won character awards at school. There was an assembly, photos, certificates and a big deal made and while you didn’t show it, I know you felt a little bummed. Just another thing that you felt your brothers did better than you. There is no competition, but being the youngest of three boys, there is.

Well, last month, it was finally your turn. You, very red-faced, accepted the award for humility and I cheered loudly along with your classmates and you were embarrassed and it was awesome.

Obviously I don’t see what the teachers see in the school dynamic; after all, at home you are the youngest and at school you are one of the oldest. But when I saw that your certificate read “For being respectful to others and understanding that everyone has strengths and weaknesses”, this filled me with pride and joy and I hardly questioned the teachers’ judgement at all.

Humility is a characteristic that is very important yet difficult to develop, especially in a generation of such instant gratification and entitlement. To be humble is to have enough confidence to love and respect yourself while also being encouraging, loving and respectful to others. It is a fine balance of knowing yourself and feeling for others that many people cannot achieve well into adult years.

Alexander, you’ve been called a lot of things (don’t worry, most good of course!) and I’m so happy that humble has now been added to the list.

Congratulations buddy, well deserved.

But obviously, don’t let it go to your head too much. 😛

Love Mommy,

XOX
